May have to get around to buying this as while its not flavor im not particularly a fan of for cyber punk at least I know my group would absolutely adore it. Plus I feel the opportunists to go more "Pink Mohawk" would allow a better overall transfer of their usual play styles. Now there's actually getting them and myself on some level to actually learning the system. Because holy cow its like pulling teeth So yeah consider me interested. One thing I'd have talked about but I understand that they don't want to make it a rule outside of Missions is the nuyen-karma exchange, or more generally, productive ways to spend money from more profitable shadowruns to improve the world.

One of my characters was quite open about how she'd take wetwork runs to fund her community in the Barrens, which is kind of the flip side of hooding and often goes hand-in-hand with more direct action for your chosen cause. taichara Nonexistent One Validated User. Wak, I have waited so bloody long for a book like this. You and Crit have dealt with me popping up on here and cranking about the grimness of SRun since 4e, especially in the actual useful-for-players parts, on more than one occasion -- you guys and the other writers have knocked this one out of the park and restored a good bit of joy for me and my flatmate. A thousand thankyous. also whoever wrote That One Sidebar Presumably In The Matrix: I'll have you know that we were both yelling over it yesterday. yup, a bit overinvested in some of the Sixth World. and Storm Front came out about the Shadowrun plot going in a really relentlessly bleak direction, I really enjoyed this book, and would heartily recommend picking it up. Was totally worth the price. It put a smile on my face to read it, and I haven't had that reaction to an SR product in I can't even remember. The genre has plenty of examples of people being heroic and pulling off big heroic wins despite having to move through grime and pay in blood to do so, and that's all people really wanted Shadowrun to tell them was still sometimes possible, like it did for years previous. No one wanted to blow up Aztechnology in a day or etc. The second word in Cyberpunk is punk. The Clash were punk too. And as Legends of Tomorrow just advocated, Ray "live action paladin in the best way" Palmer is clearly the punkiest punk that ever punked.

Sorry, "Rayge" Palmer. And this book does a wonderful job of exploring that being the case without compromising the setting. Or at least it does in my own view. It leaves plenty of room for the darker takes on the setting that exist alongside it, it just, as a supplement, provides some other options for people who are more into those options. As a more indepth dive.. I won't say it's completely perfect? Honestly the first chunk of it was not a small bummer. Repeatedly in the "sample organizations heroic Shadowrunners can support or belong to" it kept putting forward groups who either didn't care about collateral damage in the thousands, or whose goal was specifically collateral damage in the thousands in order to make their point, complete with character voices going "that's the price of war".

Yes it was all in character voice for the opinion, but as the opening material to go through, it made me feel a bit "Ah, this is going to be this kind of take on 'heroism' as far as what's possible in SR". And the Draco Foundation a previous heroic group come off as inept bunglers tripped up by their own egomaniacal internal struggles, which is kinda eh. Again, feels more like the other SR stuff to this point. That stuff aside, there are just pages and pages of really great material that talk about pursuing heroic goals in the setting, from the grittiest street level, to the highest shake the metaplot scale, all as focused on pc runner groups and what they can do to pursue goals like those, and how to maintain and survive pursuing them.

The book introduces interesting and fleshed out new characters and voices to advocate for those sorts of pursuits. Better yet, the book explores the idea of what it means to be heroic in a cyberpunk setting, the tangible costs and rewards, and especially the intangible costs and rewards, including things like the meaning of people actually feeling real gratitude and loyalty towards you, and what a network of people like that can accomplish. It really does a nice job of exploring the psychology of what would motivate people to try and do something noble, even for a moment, in a world like Shadowrun's, and how they manage to do so, and the struggles they face, both internally and externally, to keep trying to do so and the successes that can keep them motivated.

There's an entire decently insightful sidebar exploring how the notion of "I do evil things because that way it spares good people from doing them" can create sociopathic monsters and why it does. There's a specific refutation of a bunch of the stuff from that first part that was very welcome. It balances that with practical feeling material like "how heroic runners keep from being completely destitute while they pursue their goals" and that kind of thing. It makes the idea of pursuing heroism type stuff as a runner feel as lived in and fleshed out in the setting as anything else. On a level of personal delight, complete monsters like Kane and Clockwork actually suffer losses to people better than they are hopefully not some setup for a down the road "then they get revenge! Clockwork loses all his money, in hilarious fashion it's stolen and donated to an underground railroad movement for technomancers and other persecuted sorts he intimated wanting to expose and destroy.

If I had any gripe aside from the first section? Hrm, well. The Pretoria setting stuff sets up this conflict in the city between runners and the megacorps to stop its working poor from being turned into a slave caste forced to live and work underground the book does a really good and chilling setup for how this became a possible outcome in the city, slowly and over time until it's now at a crucial tipping point , but it feels like it spends more time on the gazetteer than on how that conflict is being waged. I get the need to detail the area as much as possible if you're going to frame a campaign around it and that conflict?

But maybe less space for the npcs and just a bit more on the nature of the area struggle. I'll hope there's a revisit in a future book of the conflict here as an adventure sequence maybe. That's fairly minor stuff though. If you've been looking for a feel that has been absent from modern SR, or even for a feel that you can find in some of the recent SR videogames when you're doing heroic run throughs of them, this is a really great place to find it. Definitely recommend.
